Overview

Motivation

Data requirements for a virtualized environment is a two dimensional problem: one dimension is the requirements for data that is actively consumed by an ever increasing number of virtual machines, and the second dimension is the requirements for overall data that is being accumulated and stored. The former is data-in-motion and the latter is data-at-rest. Scalable storage performance is a key requirement for data-in-motion while capacity management and data services are key for data-at-rest. For far too long, storage systems have been serving both performance and capacity requirements in a monolithic and unsustainable manner. An ideal storage design for virtualization would instead marry a solution for Data in Motion™ with a solution for Data at Rest.

Product

PernixData Flash Virtualization Platform™ (FVP™) - an enterprise-class, high-speed, software-only data tier for application acceleration - enables a strategic shift in customers’ vision for virtualized data centers. PernixData FVP is created by virtualizing server-side flash via a scale out architecture. Virtualized applications transparently leverage FVP for unprecedented performance while requiring no changes to either the application or the underlying storage infrastructure. Clustered hypervisor features such as live migrations and distributed resource management continue to operate seamlessly with FVP. By virtualizing flash in servers, PernixData is picking up where hypervisors left off after virtualizing CPU and memory.

Key Benefits

Server-Side Scale Out

FVP seamlessly scales out as you add more servers and server-side flash devices to your virtualized environment. In addition, remote flash devices are leveraged transparently for clustered hypervisor features such as live migrations.

Read and Write Acceleration

FVP accelerates both read and write operations. For write operations, FVP can be configured so that changes to the data are initially committed to the flash and later persisted on the backend storage. In such scenarios data loss is prevented via synchronous replication to flash devices on peer servers in the cluster.

Hypervisor Based

FVP is deployed transparently as a hypervisor-only module and therefore does not have the limitations of guest OS agents or virtual appliances.

Leverage Existing Storage Investments

FVP accelerates virtualized applications while continuing to leverage existing investments in storage, thereby preventing a 'rip and replace'.

Enterprise Class

FVP has no single point of failure and can survive loss of flash devices, network, servers or backend storage.

VM-Aware

FVP is purpose built to augment virtualized environments. It provides per-VM policies and resource management.

Open Architecture

FVP's open architecture means it can work equally well with any storage, any hypervisor, any flash device and any application.

Ease of Use

FVP is easy to install and manage and can be configured and monitored via an intuitive user interface.
